Dear Dallas Arboretum,

Dear Dallas Arboretum,

Hello! My name is Cory Olson, and I recently graduated with a B.A. from the University of Texas at Dallas with a focus in Design. I am writing to express my interest in the open Digital Marketing Coordinator position and believe I am uniquely qualified for the position.

During school, I gained experience creating a wide variety of projects and websites. Highlights from my education include programming in Web Design, Graphic and 3D Design, Project Management, and Marketing. The most valuable skill I learned in school was how to work with other people in different team settings. I would describe myself as curious (always wanting to learn) and coachable (either from my higher-ups or my fellow colleagues).

I was also an event coordinator for my school's UX/UI club and I oversaw and planned posts for the club's social media (Instagram, LinkedIn, Discord) as well as edited our email newsletter. My design background really helped me focus on keeping all social media posts in theme with our brand and I maintained a detail-oriented approach when it came to event deadlines/ important club dates.

I also created, planned, and marketed club events that were geared toward educating and fostering community between my peers. As event coordinator, I made sure events ran smoothly and were well-planned. I gained valuable leadership skills through this position and was responsible for allocating tasks between officers such as media promotion, event decoration, planning logistics, and scheduling food services. We host a huge event every year where we invite former students, now working professionals, to come and present. I was tasked with managing all of the professionals for this event and learned so much about effective and sincere communication.

My interest in this position goes beyond my professional ideals. For me, the Dallas Arboretum is deeply personal to me, and this would truly be a dream job. Growing up the women in my family would always take me here to eat lunch and walk through the gardens. They all had incredible gardens themselves, and it was cool to watch them identify every plant they saw. Most of the women in my family have passed away but I still see myself growing in their direction.

I am particularly interested in reaching out to younger generations who don’t get to appreciate nature as much.  I have three years of experience teaching in a preschool setting.  I am passionate about educating tomorrow's future and trying to do good for my local community. Being able to take lunches outside in the most beautiful place in Dallas wouldn’t be a bad deal either...  In the slide deck below, you’ll see photos of my family throughout the years as well as recent photos of me and my girlfriend there where we had one of our first dates.  This is a place that is truly sacred in my heart. In particular Nancy’s Garden, which shares the name of my grandmother who died of cancer in 2014.  I would truly love the opportunity to work for y’all.

Please see the photos in the slide deck and if you want to hear a little recorded introduction of myself, please DIAL-A-CORY 575-489-6765

Thanks so much for your consideration,

Cory Olson
