Context
As an avid music enthusiast, I set out to explore how user interfaces shape our music consumption habits. I designed a prototype of a music player that breaks free from the algorithm-driven experience of platforms like Spotify. I collect vinyl, and was personally inspired by the resurgence of physical media. I wanted to create a listening platform that blends intentional listening with vintage aesthetics. The project also addresses the gap in artist engagement for users who do not use social media.
Problem Statement
Modern music streaming platforms prioritize algorithms over genuine exploration, leading to repetitive recommendations and minimal financial support for smaller artists. Physical media better supports artists financially instead of the pool of money that is spread to artists by streaming services. Additionally, live performances and interviews are scattered across various platforms. This project seeks to redefine digital music interaction by emphasizing intentional discovery, artist support, and immersive engagement.
Challenges
Designing and developing a functional prototype from scratch (server, app, and interface)
Brainstorming ethical monetization strategies for music streaming
Creating an innovative, visually engaging way to showcase music collections
Designing a listening experience that prioritizes intentional discovery over endless streaming
Incorporating exclusive content, such as live performances and alternative album art
Guiding Principles
Artist-Centric Approach: Prioritizing fair artist compensation and discovery
Minimalism: Clean, intuitive design for effortless navigation
Engaging Interactions: Addictive animations and immersive 3D effects
User-Centered Research: Ensuring designs solve problems beyond personal preference
Development Story
Inspired by the iconic iPod click wheel and the circular nature of CDs and vinyl, I designed an interactive album wheel that allows users to visually explore their music collection. The shareable wheel format enhances music discovery by making album recognition seamless.
Project Timeline
Research: Interviews, surveys, and analysis of algorithmic influence on music habits and artist revenue models
Ideation: Wireframing, prototyping, and defining accessibility and usability goals
Refinement: Iterative testing and design improvements
Challenges Encountered
Determining the optimal album display format and organization
Addressing technical complexities in coding a functional prototype
Designing an engaging yet simple landing page
Key Takeaways & Next Steps
The project is still in development, with a focus on refining the artist revenue model and building a functional version in SwiftUI. Moving forward, I plan to conduct further research into sustainable streaming models that better support artists.
Lessons Learned
Break down complex projects into manageable steps
Prioritize low-fidelity designs and iterate extensively before committing to high-fidelity solutions
Ensure early-stage decisions align with long-term usability and scalability
